About Green Tree Farms

Green Tree Farms was founded in 2012 when owner Mindy Mayer purchased land in Wilder, Idaho, with a vision of raising heritage sheep. From the beginning, she set her sights on the Kerry Hill Sheep, a rare and distinctive breed from Northern Ireland, England, and Wales. At that time, Kerry Hills were not available for export from Europe, and in the United States they existed only in very low percentages. Determined to take on the challenge, Mindy began working toward the goal of establishing the first 100% purebred Kerry Hill Sheep in the country. In 2013, Green Tree Farms started with 12 registered North Country Cheviot ewes as foundation stock. A year later, with the help of a UC Davis veterinarian who had previously acquired Kerry Hill semen from Europe, the farm performed its first artificial inseminations. In 2014, Green Tree Farms celebrated the birth of the first 50% Kerry Hill lambs born in the United States. Over the next several years, perseverance and careful breeding advanced the flock to the 90% level, but reaching true 100% purity seemed just out of reach. Then, a major breakthrough came when Europe revised its regulations, allowing six-day-old embryos to be exported under strict testing and certification requirements. In 2024, Green Tree Farms successfully implanted these embryos, a highly technical process with only a 45–50% success rate. The result was historic: the birth of four purebred ewe lambs and two purebred ram lambs, the first 100% Kerry Hill sheep ever born in the United States. Today, Green Tree Farms is proud to lead the way in establishing Kerry Hill Sheep on American soil. This achievement reflects years of dedication, innovation, and determination, and marks an important milestone for heritage sheep breeding in the U.S.
